For Love of Country!

April 7, 2008

The events of January 13th 1991 frequently come to mind. I’m an American born citizen and I was nestled comfortably within the safety of my nation’s border, thousands of miles away and with an ocean in between. (Not to forget an IRON CURTAIN). Yet that particular day is burned into my memory. I can only imagine the emotions that ran through the souls of those of you who were in Lithuania at the time. So many people have shared so many personal feelings and experiences with me about that particular day. And the precarious times that followed.

I often ask myself how I would have responded to the events of that day had I been present at the time. Not being a citizen I would still have been very much compelled to stand in alliance with those on the streets. I think the sense of urgency to defend what is just, like the principles of self determination, would without doubt overcome the very real threat of personal harm or loss of life.

I admire all of you who chose not to hide behind closed doors and wait for a final outcome. As a man who places very high value on his heritage and the continuation of the existence of the Lithuanian story, I thank you from the very depths of my soul for standing in harms way.

For those of you who cannot understand Lithuanian, I have included the following link to a memorial page in honor of 14 people who ignored their fears and confronted the lethal Soviet Military machine. In defense of their family and country. And lost their lives while doing so.

Just click on any of the names listed and you will be directed to the official Lithuanian Government memorial site created in their honor. English translations of thoughts about them as individuals as submitted by friends and relatives are provided. I’m sure you will find the experience to be very moving.
